Homemade Taco Spice

Spicing up your life can open a whole new world!  What’s great about mixing your own spices is that it doesn’t come with added preservatives or chemicals, it’s easier than you might think, AND I’m convinced it saves on the bottom line.  However, in all honesty, wherever you get the spices, there can be some powerful health benefits.

If there is one thing my whole family can agree on, it’s always taco night!  Everyone gets to make it how they like it with whatever ingredients they choose, and everyone loves the taco flavor!  In fact, when I reflect on it, this is the flavor that got my kiddos eating chicken/turkey again.  They both went through phases where they wouldn’t touch meat unless it was a chicken nugget.  SO, I was always looking for ways to make them a healthy chicken that wasn’t in nugget form.  I failed often, succeeded some, but it wasn’t until I started using this spice mix that they started ASKING for taco night, ever night!

Before I hand over the recipe here a few reasons you want to spice up your life and little bit why I incorporate these ingredients:

Chili Powder has been found to be an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.  It is rich in Vitamins C and A, been shown to help with blood sugar management, and can help ease digestion through its fiber contents.

Coriander also helps fight inflammation and acts as an antioxidant while containing properties that help joint pain, aid digestion and even lower cholesterol.  In addition, it contains Vitamins C and K as well as iron and magnesium.

Oh Garlic!  I’m one of the weird ones that loves the smell of garlic.  My grandmothers house always smelled like a combination of basil and garlic.  Those smells bring me home!  Plus, it does more than ward off vampires.  Garlic is antiviral, antibacterial, anti fungal, and anti-parasitic!  Plus, it has a deep richness of phyto-chemicals that can help fight disease like, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and various cancers.

Turmeric is all the rage these days!  But did you know that turmeric isn’t fully absorbed unless combined with fresh ground pepper?  That’s right.  Sometimes things are better when they have a partner.  But turmeric on its own is still a wonderful spice.  Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties, aids digestion, acts as an antioxidant, and contains iron, potassium, vitamin c and manganese.

Paprika is super rich in antioxidants and oregano has antibacterial properties.

During cold season, I throw in some thyme, which has been known to help with sinus related issues by opening the airways a little. 

I know this is a lot of information and you probably just want to enjoy your tacos.  But the more knowledge we have about food, the better we want to feed ourselves.  So why not?  And, oh by the way, this taco spice is good on everything.  I’ve put it on ground meat, grilled chicken, and baked fish – it works every time!  This recipe makes a whole bunch that you can use over time.  It usually lasts me quite a while.  So, have fun!


Homemade Taco Spice

Christina Fit and Balanced


4 TBSP – Chili Powder

2 ½ TBSP – Ground Coriander

½ -1 TBSP – Garlic Powder (depends on your love of garlic 😉)

1 TSP – Turmeric

1 TSP – Paprika

1 TSP – Oregano

¼ TSP – Salt

¼ TSP – Pepper



Throw all the ingredients in a bowl.  Mix up with a spoon.  Place into an empty spice container and use how you like on any dish!
